Inspiring Videos Created By Young People, For Young People
These videos were produced by young people aged 16 – 17 as part of All Together Now’s Game Changers program. During the co-design process, young people in this age cohort agreed to create various solutions. One of those solutions was to produce a series of short videos aimed at inspiring fellow gamers to stand united against hate and push back on extremism in gaming spaces.
Choosing video as their medium, participants concluded this would be an effective way to engage and connect with other young gamers. Utilising their amazing creative potential and firsthand experiences, they created a collection of short videos to be shared across gaming communities and platforms. These videos not only showcase their creative skills but also reflect their own experiences and engagement with issues of hate, discrimination and extremism in online spaces.
By tapping into popular gaming culture and at times poking fun at some of its more toxic components, these videos do more than just tell a story. They highlight young people’s deep understanding of these challenges while tackling the toxicity that often seems to be woven into the fabric of gaming culture. At the same time, they offer words of encouragement and support, providing hope for systemic change in gaming communities.
These videos are designed to resonate with fellow young gamers and help shine a light on some of the impacts that toxic gaming culture can have on young gamers and the people around them.
The videos seek to elicit empathy and understanding from other young gamers but also bring to light the messages these young people would like other gamers and the industry at large to walk away with.
The themes addressed in the following videos were carefully chosen by young people, reflecting the issues they felt were most important to address. By amplifying gamer-led and youth-led initiatives, the Game Changers project aims to foster safer and more inclusive gaming communities for young people.
